Home Projectors

I remember the first time I set up my ‘dream’ home theater. I had the popcorn ready, the lights dimmed, and the opening credits of a blockbuster started rolling. The center of the screen looked like I could reach out and touch the characters, but then I looked at the corners. The text was a … Read more

It was a crisp Saturday night, the popcorn was perfectly salted, and I was finally settling in to watch an epic sci-fi marathon. Then I saw it. There is a very specific type of panic that sets in when you are standing in a darkened room, remote in hand, and your motorized projector screen makes a sound like a blender full of gravel. I have been there. Last summer, I invited the whole block over for the big game. I hit the … Read more

I was right in the middle of a Friday night double feature when it happened. I’d just dimmed the lights for a Friday night screening of Interstellar, and right there—smack in the middle of a beautiful black hole—was a fuzzy, translucent blob. It wasn’t on the screen, and no amount of microfiber scrubbing on the outer lens made a lick of difference. … Read more

I remember finally getting my basement theater finished; I’d spent weeks mastering the trick to mounting a display perfectly level and calibrating the sound until my ears rang. Finally, I sat down with a massive bowl of popcorn for a long-awaited screening of an IMAX epic. Then it happened. A subtle, rhythmic pulse. Then a … Read more

I remember my first “big screen” Friday night. I had spent hours mounting the unit, fishing cables through the ceiling, and obsessing over the screen alignment.
